Gary gave me my first Spinal Tap moment. Max played Erindale just before they broke out and the band was in the smoking area I will only speculate as engaging in some pre-show 'puff puff pass' action. 'Sound Guy' comes over. "Hey you, I need sound levels on the drums. Get on the kit and put on the headset." Off I go. "Snare, snare, snare, floor tom, bass, bass." About 10 minutes of bang crash smash and we're done. Come off the stage. Standing at the light board, Gary comes over. "One day I gotta find a guy who plays as good as me, and put a mask on him that looks like me, so I can see myself play." The school had just gotten video equipment. Quite expensive. Not real portable. But it tweaked an idea. I said "Dude, just video yourself." McCracken looks at me and with total sincerity yells "YOU are a fuckin genius!" Rock star says I am a genius. Ear to ear grin. My gratitude was shown about 20 minutes later when we were told 'Light Guy' was gonna be late, so the sound guy (now familiar with my stunning work ethic) Shanghais me to run the lights. Sure. No training, other than slide this up and down, push these buttons on and off. The band literally cowered at the visual assault, and I am sure I triggered a couple seizures in the crowd. My semi-professional career ended however after the first song. Light Guy finally made it to the gig.

That was a great concert. It’s the only one I can remember with cops in the halls. Most of our concerts were pretty quiet compared to that one.
