I think it was July 1976 and I heard a rumour that Max was going to play at Johnny Lombardi's annual CHIN (the name of the radio channel) Picnic.
This event, which was free, attracted over 100,000 over three days it was held. The event this year was held on the Toronto Centre Island. Might have been Hanlan's Point? I looked up Mike Tilka's phone number in the phone book and called him the night before the gig and asked if Max was indeed playing on the island. He said yes, and I said I'll see you there. I called my buddies Owen and Frank and we took the ferry boat over early that morning, I think around 11am.
When we got there, we moved a picnic table right up to the front barrier. There may have been another opening band, but the highlight of the festival was the annual bikini contest !! And it was done right before Max's set! We were fighting people to get on our picnic table, as you could imagine!!! Front row, bikini contest and then Max!! Most of us had a smoke break after the bikinis and returned to our table located just left of Tilka. We had the best seat in the house! Everyone else was standing around and we were seated on our private picnic table! Max played their set and as usual was very well received. I remember looking behind me and seeing a mass of people everywhere! What a show!
