Max definitely played the Penthouse with the Kersey unit. I was at the August 29, 1974 gig because it was two days after my 19th birthday. I was two tables from the stage. Kim's "lead boost" was to turn around and crank his Ampeg V4 for solos, then pivot to turn it back down. They were playing most of what would become the first album. The setlist was all stuff like Lily, Here Among The Cats, Hangover, etc. (Lily was freaking fabulous).
